Eighth graders "move up" during ceremony

A total of 102 eighth grade students at Jordan-Elbridge Middle School said farewell to their school and hello to high school during a moving up ceremony on June 19.

Parents, teachers and administrators filled the auditorium as the students eagerly looked on. The ceremony featured various speakers who all praised the students for their efforts and encouraged them to explore the many opportunities at the high school before they graduate in 2022.

Superintendent James Froio referred to the high school program of studies and talked about options in social studies, photography, technology and more. He also talked about the college credits available to students, and said this year’s valedictorian, Hugh Schader (who is headed to Harvard University), will graduate with 48.

“We have a track to Harvard, you just have to want it,” he said.

He also mentioned the multiple programs available for students who choose to enter the working field after graduation.

“The students we have graduating in the heavy equipment field are deciding which jobs they want to take,” he added.

Middle school principal David Shafer also spoke about the “endless opportunities” for students at the high school and urged them to continue their work. He asked them not to forget the lessons they learned during their International Baccalaureate (IB) community projects this year.My Image File

“I challenge each of you to continue to commit yourself to community service and volunteerism,” he said.

Elora Kunz then addressed the class and advised them not to let the "ups and downs" of life get them down. Valerie Reith - who told a story about how middle school shaped who she is - left the class with two pieces of advice: you can’t control the future and “never forget to love yourself because you can make the impossible possible.”

Finally, following a presentation of certificates, high school principal David Zehner welcomed the students to high school.
