A total of 22 students from Jordan-Elbridge High School received 34 awards in the 2019 CNY Scholastic Art competition. Ten students earned gold keys, or the highest honor. Also, senior Malena Phillips earned five honors including two gold keys, two silver keys and one honorable mention. One of her gold keys was for total art portfolio.

ter their works in the annual program, which also includes students from about 13 Central New York counties. Individual pieces and portfolios are awarded Gold Key (highest honor), Silver Key and Honorable Mention. Gold Key award winners will be considered for national-level recognition. All of the student’s works were judged by professional artists, photographers, and educators.

Last year, a total of 15 students from JEHS took home a total of 25 awards. In the previous year, seven students earned a total of 17 awards.

Art teacher Katie DeLorenzo said she believes this is the highest number of awards students have ever won during the competition.

“It is truly a testament to the students in the department as a whole,” she said.

“Every year they set the bar higher and rise to meet the standards of the students before them. One of the things I am proudest of is how supportive our students are of each other. When the winners were announced, regardless of whether or not students won an award, they all congratulated each other and were genuinely happy for those who did receive an award.”

DeLorenzo added that students should feel a strong sense of accomplishment, and she sees that in the classroom.

“They are always giving each other feedback and willing to help each other out, and that definitely is a big factor in their growing success by and large,” she said.
