Students experience Fire Prevention Day at Elbridge Elementary

Students at Elbridge Elementary experienced a full-scale fire rescue demonstration on Oct. 11 during Fire Prevention Day at the school. One of the highlights of the event included firefighters "rescuing" principal R.J. Hartwell from the roof of the building.

Fire Prevention Day teaches students about how to prevent fires, and what to expect if there's a fire at the school, or at home.

Chris Cullen, chief of the Warners/Memphis Fire Department, said he enjoys teaching the students and contributing to their safety.

"I enjoy interacting with the kids and teaching them in hopes that if they ever encounter us in an emergency situation, that it will be a bit less scary,” he said.

Hartwell said the students liked the event and talked about it all week.

“Students always look forward to this event. They really enjoyed seeing me get rescued,” he said.

“I’m most appreciative to our local firefighters and other helpers for spending the time with us.”

Firefighters from Elbridge, Jordan, and Warners/Memphis departments participated in the drill, and then spent the day talking to students in their classrooms.
