Historic visit to Quince St. Cemetery

Teacher Gayle McCabe wasn't able to take her students on a field trip this year, so she improvised by visiting local, walkable locations. One visit toward the end of the school year was to the Quince Street Cemetery.

Mrs. McCabe’s history class has been digging deep into the numerous historic events marking the 1800s. Students pondered what it must have been like for the citizens of Jordan during those momentous times.

“This is interesting,” Justin Brewer said. “This taught me we really should take care of our history.”

Mrs. McCabe's classroom this year was adorned with a timeline, noting various dates with historic significance. Each student carried their chosen event during the walk throughout the village. During the stop at the cemetery, each student had to locate a gravestone of a person who would have been alive during their event of interest.

"Whoa, this lady was alive when Lincoln freed the slaves,” noticed student Jacob Thorpe upon finding his match.

“Oh my God, when I thought about it, I thought it was so interesting. We saw all different things. It was cool to find someone who was alive when there was a Pony Express,“ student Nina DeVaul added.

“It was pretty fascinating because we got to see a really old piece of history,” said student Kaleb Vitale.
