JEHS partners with SECNY FCU to open "Eagle Branch"

Jordan-Elbridge High School has partnered with SECNY Federal Credit Union to open a student branch program called “Eagle Branch” in the school’s cafeteria. The financial literacy program aims to provide students real-life, project-based educational opportunities.

“Students start by interviewing for their position, then they must receive training from our professional staff, and then they will be ready to begin work and develop key skills for success in the workplace,” explained SECNY Director of Education Marketing Aerik Radley.

Each month, students will learn about a new financial tool, with topics ranging from the difference between a savings and checking account, to debit and credit cards. Radley said the goal of the program is to combat a lack of financial literacy among young adults so that they can be the most prepared for their careers and financial futures.

“The Jordan-Elbridge community should be proud! The administrators, staff and teachers involved with this project truly care about these students and bringing them resources to enhance the learning experience,” added Radley.

Every student in the school has an opportunity to start their own account and begin saving. The branch will be open each Tuesday and Thursday for students to stop by and use. Students who will be working at the branch say a lot of their friends have jobs, but don’t quite understand how to open a savings account or use a debit card.

“Plus, it’s literally right here, people don’t have to drive to get to it so they’ll be more likely to use it,” said JEHS student Clay, who plans to be one of the first students to open an account with the branch.

Jordan-Elbridge is the third district in the area to work with SECNY FCU to set up a Student Branch program.
