NJHS plans Earth Day fundraiser
The National Junior Honor Society is encouraging students to support our planet by making eco-friendly food choices this week. Students compiled research to show how the decisions we make about what we eat impact the earth in surprising ways. For instance, bald eagles are a local bird of prey whose habitats were damaged over many decades by agricultural insecticides used on our food products. These insecticides leaked into our waterways, contaminating fish that the eagles preyed upon. Their population drastically declined, though more recent efforts have caused eagle numbers to rebound.
On Earth Day, April 22nd, students will be selling $1 homemade vegan sugar cookies during school lunch in hopes of raising enough money to adopt a bald eagle from the National Wildlife Federation! The money put towards the adoption will be used to further research and conservation efforts to protect the eagle population.
NJHS students are eager to help a species so dear to our district, and to help others gain awareness about the importance of making positive food choices for our planet. Click the QR code in the below flyer to read NJHS's research and to print free posters. You can also download the flyer here.
