JEMS hosts "risk-taker contest" for Black History Month

Jordan-Elbridge Middle School is celebrating Black History Month by focusing on the learner profile trait, risk-taker. This is a time when we celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans throughout history.

To be a positive risk-taker, you approach difficult things without the fear of making mistakes. You accept that failure is often a step in the journey to success. You are daring and willing to try new things instead of doing only what’s within your comfort zone. You’re not afraid to be wrong, or different, or to go against the grain.

Throughout history, many Black Americans have taken risks to gain freedom and equal rights. They have also invented things that changed the course of our country, written novels and music, educated others, and more. Any great accomplishment must involve some measure of risk. Being a positive risk-taker is what makes leaders out of us.

To celebrate both Black History Month and the learner profile trait of risk-taker, middle school students are invited to participate in the "Risk-taker Contest."

The challenge is to create an artifact with the following guidelines:
  • Choose a well-known African American from any time in world history
  • Highlight a risk this person took to make a positive impact on the world
  • Create an artifact that represents the positive impact of this person’s risk
Your design can take any format. For example, you could create:
  • a piece of writing, like a poem, essay, or song
  • an artwork, like a poster, painting, drawing, or sculpture
  • a 3D model, like a model or a diorama
Rules:
  1. Your design must show the positive risk taken by an African American.
  2. All work must be original, meaning it was created by YOU.
  3. Include your name and grade level.
  4. Submit your work by February 28th.
How to submit:
If your work is digital - email to or share the document with Ms. Farnsworth. If your work is not digital, bring your creation to the library and
turn in to Mr. Larham.

Winners will receive a fantastic prize and will be featured on the JECSD website!
