JEMS 6th Graders Embark on an Educational Adventure to Emerson Park

Excitement was in the air as sixth-grade students from Jordan-Elbridge Middle School prepared for an enriching experience at Emerson Park in Auburn. On September 19, these young environmental enthusiasts embarked on a field trip as part of the Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation Field Days Program.

Emerson Park, a picturesque location nestled along the shores of Owasco Lake, provides the perfect backdrop for this immersive learning experience. The park's serene environment, lush greenery, and scenic lakefront offer an ideal setting for students to connect with nature while learning vital lessons about the environment.

This annual event, co-sponsored by the Cayuga County Soil and Water Conservation District and Cooperative Extension of Cayuga County, is a fantastic opportunity for our students to delve into the wonders of the natural world and learn about the importance of conservation. During their visit, our 6th graders embarked on an educational adventure, rotating through various learning stations that offered valuable insights into our environment. Each station provided a unique perspective on our natural resources and the efforts taken to protect them.
Here are some highlights from their enriching day:
 1. Electrical Energy in the Soil: Our students gained a deeper understanding of the fascinating world beneath their feet, discovering the role of electrical energy in the soil and its impact on plant growth and ecosystems.
 2. Maple Sugar Industry: They explored the sweet side of nature as they learned about the maple sugar industry, appreciating the art and science behind producing this beloved natural treat.
 3. Dairy Farms and Soil Protection: The importance of soil conservation and its connection to dairy farming were emphasized, highlighting the need to protect our soil for future generations.
 4. Migratory Birds and Habitats: Our students discovered the wonders of migratory birds, their habitats, and the essential role these birds play in our ecosystems and food chains.
 5. NYS Fish and Their Senses: They dived into the underwater world, learning about New York State fish species and their extraordinary sensory adaptations for survival.

One exciting aspect of this field trip is the essay contest sponsored by the Cayuga County Water and Soil division. Our sixth graders will have the opportunity to reflect on their favorite station and the knowledge they acquired. This contest not only encourages them to think critically about what they learned but also allows them to express their newfound passion for conservation.
