Stunning Upset: JE Shocks Top-Seeded Holland Patent in Section III Class B Baseball Playoffs

In a thrilling display of grit and determination, the #16 seed Jordan-Elbridge boys baseball team achieved an unforgettable upset, defeating the #1 seed Holland Patent 2-0 in the first round of the 2024 Section III Class B brackets. This monumental victory was powered by an exceptional performance from sophomore pitcher David Dominick and a timely home run from Hunter LaBarge.

David Dominick delivered a masterclass on the mound, pitching a one-hit shutout that left the Holland Patent lineup stymied and unable to generate any offensive momentum. Dominick's control and composure were evident from the start, as he confidently navigated through the innings, supported by an equally resolute defense.

The Eagles wasted no time in making their mark on the game. In the top of the first inning, Nolan Brunelle showcased his keen base-running skills. After reaching base, Brunelle capitalized on a well-timed walk drawn by Shannon Ahern III to cross home plate, giving Jordan-Elbridge an early 1-0 lead. This initial run set the tone for the underdogs and demonstrated their readiness to challenge the top seed.

The decisive moment of the game came in the fifth inning when Hunter LaBarge, displaying remarkable poise and power, launched his first career home run. This solo shot not only doubled JE's lead but also provided a critical buffer that bolstered the team's confidence as they closed in on a historic victory.

Head coach Ryan Cooper was effusive in his praise for his team, highlighting their unwavering belief and resilience. "This team knew it was going to be a tough game against the top seed in Class B," Cooper remarked. "We played tough games all year and knew we had to play our best yesterday. Everyone in our dugout knew that if we played at a high standard, we could beat anyone, and the guys proved that. It may have been a shock to most, but not to the 20 guys in the dugout."

JE's defensive prowess was on full display throughout the game. The Eagles' fielders executed flawlessly, making crucial plays to alleviate pressure on Dominick and keep Holland Patent at bay. Each player contributed to a collective effort that underscored their preparation and teamwork.

Despite the loss, Holland Patent showcased the talent and sportsmanship befitting a top-seeded team. Their players fought hard, and their season's accomplishments remain commendable. However, on this day, it was Jordan-Elbridge's turn to shine and demonstrate the unpredictable magic of playoff baseball.

With this victory, JE advances to the quarterfinals, where they will face Little Falls tomorrow. The team heads into the next round with a surge of momentum and the belief that they can continue their Cinderella run through the playoffs.
