From English Class to Elementary Leadership: Katie Eldridge’s Dynamic Journey at JECSD

Mrs. Katie Eldridge begins her mornings with high school freshmen, guiding them through the nuances of English literature at Jordan-Elbridge High School. By late morning, she transitions to a very different classroom environment—Elbridge Elementary School—where she steps into her role as a principal intern under the mentorship of Principal Brooke Bastian. This unique schedule not only highlights her versatility as an educator but also reflects her unwavering dedication to education at every level.

An Educator for All Ages
With 18 years of teaching experience spanning every level of education—from preschool to college—Mrs. Eldridge’s career has been defined by variety and adaptability. At Jordan-Elbridge Central School District, she’s found a home. “I’ve spent more time at JECSD than anywhere else,” she shared. Starting with 8th graders at JEMS, she transitioned to teaching 9th grade English at the high school, where she’s spent the majority of her time. Now, completing the “tour” of the district at Elbridge Elementary brings her immense joy.

Each day, she shifts between “big kids” and “littles,” embracing the energy and excitement each group brings. “Jumping from the big kids to the littles is really fun—I’m never bored,” she says with a smile. Her early experience implementing a UPK program when her own children were young prepared her well for this unique dual role. “Coming to Elbridge was like putting on a beloved outfit I simply haven’t worn in a while.”

Under the mentorship of Principal Brooke Bastian, Mrs. Eldridge has been soaking up lessons in leadership. “Brooke has been an excellent mentor,” she says, praising Bastian’s dedication to early literacy and her strong systems for addressing social-emotional and behavioral needs. “I’ve learned so much since September and look forward to the rest of the year under her guidance.”

A Path to Leadership
Mrs. Eldridge’s journey into school administration has been a deliberate one, driven by a desire to expand her impact beyond the classroom. She earned a Master’s degree in Educational Policy and Leadership from The University of Iowa and is currently pursuing two Certificates of Advanced Study in School Building and School District Leadership. Balancing her studies with her work and family life has been a three-year endeavor, and she’s already started on a third certificate in School District Business Leadership.

Her interest in administration began years ago at The University of Iowa but was put on hold to focus on her family. Now, after nearly two decades in the classroom, she’s ready to step into a new role. “I’ve gained a lot of wisdom working in diverse settings, which has given me perspective and objectivity—both critical for leadership,” she reflects.

When asked what level of education she sees herself leading, she answers thoughtfully, “I’d be comfortable at any level. However, the enthusiasm and joy that young children bring into the building is buoying. It’s a reminder of why we do this work.”

Beyond the Classroom
Outside of work, Mrs. Eldridge leads a dynamic life filled with a variety of hobbies. She enjoys reading, traveling, cooking, fitness activities like CrossFit and Nordic skiing, and even needlework and gardening. Two summers ago, her family spent nearly a month in England and Scotland, attending two weddings and exploring the rich history and culture of the region. They’re already planning a return trip.

In addition to her teaching and administrative pursuits, Mrs. Eldridge is also an author. She contributed the closing chapter of Empowering Youth to Confront the Climate Crisis in English Language Arts, set for release this December by Teachers College Press. The book, with a foreword by leading global scientist Michael Mann, is a testament to her commitment to education and meaningful change.

Looking Ahead
As Katie Eldridge continues to split her days between high school and elementary school, she’s not just shaping young minds—she’s preparing for a leadership role that will allow her to make an even greater impact. Whether guiding a classroom discussion on Shakespeare or supporting early readers as they master literacy skills, she embodies the passion and dedication that define great educators.

For Mrs. Eldridge, education is not just a career—it’s a lifelong journey of growth, relationships, and inspiring the next generation.
