JEHS Junior Bridget Whiting Captivates at Regional Shakespeare Competition
“All the world’s a stage,” and Jordan-Elbridge High School junior Bridget Whiting once again proved she belongs in the spotlight. Competing against eight of Central New York’s most talented young performers, Bridget earned runner-up at the 37th Annual Regional Shakespeare Competition of Central New York, marking her second consecutive year finishing among the top competitors.
Bridget performed Isabella’s powerful monologue from Measure for Measure (Act 5, Scene 1), a moment in which Isabella, wronged by the deceitful Angelo, refuses to be silenced. Confronting Duke Vincentio with unwavering conviction, she declared:
"Make not impossible
That which but seems unlike: 'tis not impossible
But one, the wicked’st caitiff on the ground,
May seem as shy, as grave, as just, as absolute
As Angelo."
She followed with Sonnet 28, Shakespeare’s poetic lament on restlessness and torment, seamlessly transitioning from fiery defiance to introspective melancholy. Through both pieces, Bridget demonstrated not only technical excellence but also a deep emotional connection to the material.
The competition was adjudicated by three distinguished judges:
- Bradley Beckman – Instructor of Acting, Syracuse University School of Drama
- Matt Chiorini – Interim Chair, Department of Visual and Performing Arts & Director of Theatre Program, Le Moyne College
- Erica Murphy – Assistant Professor, Syracuse University Department of Drama
The ESU National Shakespeare Competition is more than just a performance showcase; it is a rigorous educational program that aligns with modern teaching practices. Participating students:
- Develop critical thinking, close reading, and public speaking skills
- Engage in all six levels of Bloom’s taxonomy, from recall to creation
- Build self-confidence through reading, analysis, and performance
- Explore universal themes and decipher Shakespeare’s intricate language
- Work in a student-centered, cross-curricular environment that meets state and national standards in English Language Arts and Drama
Each year, the first-place winner of the Syracuse Regional Shakespeare Competition advances to the National Shakespeare Competition at Lincoln Center in New York City. This year’s national event will take place on April 28, 2025, where regional champions from across the country will compete for scholarships and the opportunity to perform on one of the most prestigious stages in the world.
With two consecutive runner-up finishes, Bridget Whiting continues to make her mark in the competition. As Shakespeare wrote in Twelfth Night:
"Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them."
Bridget's journey with Shakespeare is far from over, and with her talent, passion, and determination, she may soon achieve the greatness she so brilliantly embodies on stage.
