A Night to Remember: Jordan-Elbridge High School Celebrates the 61st Annual Commencement
While the forecast prompted a proactive decision to move the ceremony indoors, the 61st Annual Jordan-Elbridge High School Commencement was nothing short of momentous. Held in the High School Auditorium due to anticipated thunderstorms, the ceremony overflowed with pride, reflection, and celebration for the Class of 2025.
The evening began with a warm welcome from Superintendent of Schools James Froio, followed by a stirring rendition of the National Anthem performed by graduate Emma Rose, setting a powerful and emotional tone.
Graduates then heard from key note speaker Karen Hourigan, a member of the Class of 1986, retiring English teacher, and beloved figure in the district for 30 years. Hourigan delivered a heartfelt message encouraging students to never give up, sharing a personal story of how she bombed her first JE teaching interview—but came back stronger, ultimately securing the job that would define her career.
High School Principal Mark Schermerhorn then inducted two remarkable individuals into the JE Wall of Honor. William Vita was recognized for his extraordinary efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading the charge to distribute more than 200,000 meals to students in need. Michael Chiaramonte, longtime class advisor and proud father of graduating twins, was also honored for his unwavering dedication to students and staff—commitment that will continue even as his own children graduate.
Valedictorian Nicholas Loperfido delivered a witty, thoughtful address, admitting he never expected to be named Valedictorian. As he playfully acknowledged his classmates, he also paid tribute to the memory of Mr. Dennis Burlingame, JE’s beloved School Resource Officer, who tragically passed away this spring.
Next, Salutatorian Brooke Chiaramonte inspired the crowd with a powerful speech built around the theme: “I don’t care what you think!”—a call to embrace authenticity and self-confidence in the face of judgment.
A special moment followed as David Furney, Class of 2005 and Dean of Health and Technology at Onondaga Community College, presented graduate Amelya Drake with her Associate’s Degree. Through her dedication and hard work, Amelya earned both her high school diploma and a college degree—a remarkable achievement that drew a standing ovation.
The ceremony continued with the Presentation of Diplomas by Mr. Froio, while each graduate received a rose from High School Secretary Julie Hickey. In the grand finale, the Class of 2025 filled the air with caps—marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next.
Graduates and their families then gathered in the gymnasium to take photos and celebrate the night’s milestone together.
