Over 40 Riders Raise $17,000 in First Annual Gear Up 4 Kids Bike-a-thon
More than 40 cyclists took to the trails on Friday, Sept. 12, for the first-ever Gear Up 4 Kids Bike-a-thon, a powerful community event benefitting McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center (MRCAC). Riders covered more than 50 miles round trip, starting from MRCAC’s Center on East Genesee Street, traveling along the Empire State Trail to Jordan-Elbridge Elementary, Middle, and High Schools — and back again.
This inaugural ride was more than just a bike-a-thon — it was a chance to take action in the fight against child abuse. Together, participants raised more than $17,000 to support MRCAC’s mission of providing a path to healing for children and families impacted by abuse in Onondaga County. Last year alone, MRCAC served 1,811 children, offering safety, advocacy, and support during some of the most challenging times of their lives.
Riders were able to choose their challenge, with routes ranging from a 50-mile round trip, a 25-mile ride in either direction, or a 7-mile loop around all three JE school buildings. Each group was led by experienced cyclists, with safety training available for those new to long-distance riding.
The event also celebrated its top fundraisers:
-
?? Douglas Arnold – $8,378
-
?? James Sleeper – $1,425
-
?? Jim Sherman – $1,075
Jordan-Elbridge students and staff came out to cheer the riders on as they arrived at the schools, creating an unforgettable moment of community spirit.
With the success of this first event, MRCAC hopes to make Gear Up 4 Kids an annual tradition — combining cycling, community, and a shared mission to protect children.
