JEMS 8th Graders Collaborate with the Salvation Army in Emergency Response Tabletop Exercise
Last week, 8th grade students participated in a hands-on tabletop exercise led by members of the local Salvation Army emergency services team. Students learned about the vital role the Salvation Army plays in supporting communities during times of crisis, then took on the challenge of planning their own coordinated response to a mock natural disaster in Jordan-Elbridge.
Working in teams, students created an action plan that included budgeting to feed 150 community members, writing a public service announcement, and developing a response strategy from multiple viewpoints. The activity encouraged collaboration, critical thinking, and empathy—helping students see how community service can make a real impact.
This exercise is part of a larger 8th grade initiative designed to introduce students to the power of service. In the coming weeks, students will select a service focus area and work in small groups to develop a year-long community service project that will culminate in a Community Expo Night later this school year.
