Brunelle Joins Section III’s Elite 2,000-Point Club

Jordan-Elbridge senior Nolan Brunelle stamped his name into the Section III record book in unforgettable fashion on Monday night.

With the Eagles leading Canastota, Brunelle sliced through multiple defenders along the baseline and finished a tough reverse layup, the bucket that pushed him past the 2,000-point mark for his high school career. The basket made Brunelle just the 10th boys basketball player in Section III history to reach the milestone.

Brunelle finished the night with exactly the 29 points he needed, powering Jordan-Elbridge to a 62-48 victory over Canastota.

The Eagles improved to 7-4 on the season with the win and still have eight regular-season games remaining, giving Brunelle plenty of runway to continue climbing the Section III scoring charts. Jamesville-DeWitt’s Bernard Blunt currently tops the list with 2,507 career points, followed by CBA’s Greg Paulus at 2,399. Averaging just under 29 points per game, Brunelle could realistically push into the top five all-time.

Brunelle’s impact extends well beyond total points. He has knocked down 329 career three-pointers, placing him fifth all-time in New York State high school history according to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association record book. Former Syracuse standout Joe Girard III (Glens Falls) leads the state with 688, but Brunelle is within striking distance of moving even higher. With 42 more made threes, he would climb into second place all-time.

Next season, Brunelle will continue his basketball career at Keuka College, but his focus remains firmly on the present.

“Obviously, it’s a really cool accomplishment to say that not many people have done it,” Brunelle said. “I’m very fortunate to have done it, but going into it, this was never my goal. I just really like winning and playing with my teammates and coaches. That’s what matters most.”

That mindset has defined Brunelle’s career at Jordan-Elbridge — a scorer capable of historic nights, but a leader driven by the ultimate goal of bringing a sectional championship back to JE.
