JEHS Science Honor Society Induction Celebrates Curiosity, Leadership, and New Members

Jordan-Elbridge High School proudly welcomed a new group of student leaders into the Science Honor Society during last night’s induction ceremony, celebrating their commitment to scholarship, character, leadership, and service.

The evening began with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Abigayle Bates, followed by welcoming remarks from Science Honor Society Advisor Mr. Dan Bondgren and Superintendent of Schools Mr. Jim Froio. Superintendent Froio then introduced the evening’s guest speaker, Monica Caves, a Research Scientist and Outreach Coordinator for the Upstate Freshwater Institute.

Caves shared her journey from growing up in the Midwest to pursuing her education at Elmira College and SUNY Oneonta, which ultimately led her to Upstate New York. She spoke about her work helping restore Onondaga Lake and studying freshwater ecosystems across New York State, connecting her experiences to a broader message for students.

“Lakes are a lot like life—they’re unpredictable, and things can change in a hurry,” Caves said. “Because you never know everything, you have to stay curious and open to growth. Whether you choose to study science or follow another path, always be curious.”

Following her remarks, the ceremony continued with the traditional candle lighting. Treasurer Lauren Richardson spoke on the importance of character, Secretary Logan Guerrette reflected on scholarship, President Abigayle Bates highlighted leadership, and Vice President Sarah Love emphasized service—core pillars of the Science Honor Society.

New inductees were then recognized and presented with their membership pins before reciting the NYSSHS Pledge, officially welcoming them into the organization.

This year’s inductees include juniors Annabella D’Arrigo, Breeanna Dunn, Ryan Gibbs, Stella Opanhoske, Paige Reimer, and sophomores Shannon Ahern III, Brody Boylan, Sophia Guzman, Genevieve Walrath, and Alyssa Woytowich.

The ceremony served as a meaningful celebration of academic achievement and a reminder of the curiosity and dedication that drive scientific discovery.
