Student shows success when returning to in-person learning Student shows success when returning to in-person learning: Senior Mackenzie Orzelo works hard on her schoolwork, but you might not guess that based on her grades at the beginning of the school year. Mackenzie was struggling, but it wasn’t for lack of effort. “It’s not that I didn’t want to try, but my road didn’t even have Wi-Fi, I was using hotspots to get all of my work done,” said Mackenzie. Jordan-Elbridge High School provided those hotspots, but it wasn’t just technical difficulties holding Mackenzie back. She said she was also dealing with anxiety surrounding COVID-19, and had a hard time focusing on virtual lessons. When cheerleading started back up shortly after winter break, Mackenzie knew she was ready to get back to in-person learning. “I went from not passing anything to passing ...
Celebrating a successful winter sports season Celebrating a successful winter sports season: As winter sports come to a close, we’re looking back at a season Director of Athletics Dan Stadtmiller says was planned on the fly. Stadtmiller usually has an entire calendar year to plan out a season. That includes scheduling games, officials, buses and everything in between. “This winter sports season was a sprint from planning, to the start, and to the finish,” said Stadtmiller. Each team got through their season with just one small hiccup, according to Stadtmiller. The District completed more than 150 COVID-19 tests each week on student-athletes, and screened all participants, employees and officials daily for symptoms. Ultimately, the precautions allowed for seniors to celebrate an in-person senior night so families could recognize their students’ commitments. ...

Whether buying from a local sale or receiving donations from community members, Emily is collecting for a cause. She’s on track to be one of the first female Eagle Scouts in the district, and the last piece to the puzzle is completing a community service project. While coming up with an idea, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to commemorate her former classmate, Nathan Wagner. Nate lost a three-year battle to cancer last year. He spent a lot of time at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Keeping all that in mind, Emily came up with “Project 22.” She’s creating fleece blankets to be donated to patients at Upstate Golisano, using 22 as a tribute to Nate, who sported the number on his lacrosse jersey. ...
