JEMS will host STEAM camp in July JEMS will host STEAM camp in July: Jordan-Elbridge Middle School will hold a science camp this summer called "Building the Future: Full S.T.E.A.M Ahead!" The theme is learning through creation. The camp will be held from July 17th - 21st, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Students will enter through the front doors of the middle school, and head to the science lab in room 148.  Throughout the week, students can expect to learn about robotics, electricity, physics of motion, electromagnetic radiation, engineering, and earth science. Families can sign their students up through Google Classroom using the code: ohckxv2, or email Mr. McCormick via email, or by calling (315) 689-8520 x2148. Participation is limited, so be sure to sign up soon!
Senior athletes awarded at annual banquet Senior athletes awarded at annual banquet: Jordan-Elbridge High School senior athletes have received recognition for their hard work on and off the field this school year. The Senior Athletic Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, June 8th at the Lodge. Each senior received a senior athlete plaque and a group of special athletes were given additional awards and scholarships.  Congratulations to all of our student-athletes! Loren Barrigar to perform for JEHS students during Pre-test De-stress Day Loren Barrigar to perform for JEHS students during Pre-test De-stress Day: Jordan-Elbridge alumni Loren Barrigar and his son LJ will be inspiring high school students through song during pre-test de-stress day on May 25 th . The motivational assembly and concert are possible due to a grant from CNY Arts. Through video clips, songs, and stories, Loren will share the story of his resilience and determination to follow his dreams after a serious chainsaw accident in 2019. Loren will tell students how he was able to accept his injury and forge ahead by never giving up, allowing help from others, and learning to adjust his plan to keep his dreams alive. Loren and LJ plan to take the concert to students in schools across the state. District residents approve $36.2 million budget; elect three BOE members District residents approve $36.2 million budget; elect three BOE members: On May 16 th , Jordan-Elbridge Central School District voters approved the district's $36,195,000 budget for 2023-24 with 215 yes votes to 134 no votes and elected three Board of Education members. The approved budget carries a 2.75 percent tax levy increase and boosts spending by 3.48 percent, or $1,216,500. This budget includes increased funding to support all JE academic and co-curricular activities, including funding for additional assistant coaches for several sports. JEMS Robotics Club to host open house on May 13 JEMS Robotics Club to host open house on May 13: The Jordan-Elbridge Robotics Club will be hosting an Open House on Saturday, May 13 th to get students excited about becoming involved in the club. Anyone is welcome to attend the open house, which will run from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., but currently Robotics Club is only available for middle school students. The JEMS Robotics Club uses VEX IQ robotics. Each year, VEX comes out with a new game board challenge that includes different elements. Students build a robot to complete the games on the board while trying to get the best score. Students can even make a group and register for local competitions. How students celebrate the planet beyond Earth Day at JE How students celebrate the planet beyond Earth Day at JE: Earth Day may fall on just one day a year, but lessons about conservation and our planet extend beyond April. At Elbridge Elementary, ELL students spend a whole unit on a project titled “Save Our Earth.” Students began by reading articles and books and watching video clips about the importance of recycling. Then, they summarized what they watched and illustrated those summaries. Students then discussed cause and effect by making posters that included drawings, a poem, and a handy list of ideas to improve trash removal or recycling at home. “The students’ engagement was incredible,” said teacher Danuta Goldmann. “They sincerely care about the environm ent, its plant life, animals, and their habitat.” At JEMS, students celebrated the beauty ...
A closer look at upcoming spring play with student-actors portraying Holmes & Watson A closer look at upcoming spring play with student-actors portraying Holmes & Watson: The character of Sherlock Holmes has been adapted many times in Hollywood; but you can expect a new twist in JEHS’ upcoming performance of “Sherlock Holmes and the Portal of Time.” “We’ve done a lot of slapstick, a lot of funny this year, so this play has some more serious topics,” explained director Denise Deapo. “They’re going back in time to do something important; and the lighting and stage setup will be really fun to see.” Aydan Piper (left) and Cooper Childres (right) will play Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in  "Sherlock Holmes and the Portal of Time." Voters to consider $36.2 million budget on May 16th Voters to consider $36.2 million budget on May 16th: On Tuesday, May 16th, Jordan-Elbridge Central School District residents will vote on a proposed $36,195,000 budget for the 2023-24 school year. This budget represents a spending increase of 3.48 percent, or $1,216,500 and carries a 2.75 percent tax levy increase. This is only the third time in eight years that Jordan-Elbridge has presented a budget with a tax increase to voters. The proposed 2.75 percent tax levy increase falls below the district’s legal limit as defined by New York’s tax levy cap legislation. That means a simple majority (50 percent of votes plus one) is needed to approve the budget. This year’s proposed tax levy increase is necessary due to both a modest increase in state aid, and the continued rising costs of goods and services. Current high ...
Cast announced for JEHS spring play Cast announced for JEHS spring play: Jordan-Elbridge High School will be performing "Sherlock Holmes and the Portal of Time" by Michael Druce next month. The show will take place on Friday, May 19th and Saturday, May 20th at 7:30 p.m. at JEHS. Only one man can change the outcome of World War II: Professor Moriarty. And only one man can stop this evil mastermind from changing the fate of the world: Sherlock Holmes. In this witty, fast-paced, and wildly inventive adventure, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson must travel from London in 1921 to Berlin in 1939 to stop Moriarty from changing the outcome of history. With the help of H.G. Wells, his delightful wife, Jane, and two Albert Einsteins, Holmes, and Watson pursue Moriarty through time. JE named one of the JE named one of the "Best Communities for Music Education": The Jordan-Elbridge Central School District was once again named one of the "Best Communities for Music Education" by the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) Foundation. This is the 11th year JE has received the award. The award goes to communities for the outstanding efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders who are making music part of a well-rounded education for every child. It takes commitment from the entire community to ensure that every child can learn and grow with music. Congratulations to all who helped the district achieve this distinction! 
Donate your gently used lacrosse equipment throughout April Donate your gently used lacrosse equipment throughout April: A group of eighth grade students is collecting gently used lacrosse equipment to donate to young athletes who are interested in playing the sport, but might not be able to afford to purchase the necessary tools. Carter, Conner, Ian, and Zack are working together with the JE Youth Lacrosse Program for their 8th grade IB Community Project. Anyone who is able to donate can bring equipment to any home varsity lacrosse game in the month of April. There will be a donation bin located outside of the fieldhouse concession stand. Donations can also be dropped off at either the middle school or high school main offices.
JEHS students show off creativity in CNY Innovation Challenge JEHS students show off creativity in CNY Innovation Challenge: JEHS students took part in the CNY Innovation Challenge over spring break week. The competition is modeled a bit like shark tank; students present their ideas for unique products and services in front of a panel of industry professionals. The experience gives students a chance to learn about entrepreneurship.   Two teams of seniors represented JE at the competition. Kendra Beaumont and Aryonnah Albertson created the Fringe Thermos: a customizable mug with a control panel that enables the exact temperature of its contents to be adjusted. Their thermos comes with a portable charger that fits in standard size cup holders. JEMS student shows activism through art JEMS student shows activism through art: A sixth-grade student used a recent art class assignment as an opportunity to turn artwork into advocacy. Sevanna Saunders’ class was tasked with creating an abstract work of art that was fully self-designed. “As a class, we looked at and discussed a variety of different pieces of abstract art throughout history, focusing on aesthetics as a key concept and how we as viewers and creators decide if something is aesthetically pleasing/beautiful, and whether that actually matters to appreciate art,” explained teacher Taylor Fletcher, when describing the assignment. Students were then asked to research, design, and create their work of abstract art. Sevanna’s piece, “The River’s Symphony,” was made to symbolize a larger societal issue: pollution. ...
JEHS student selected for All-CNY boys basketball team JEHS student selected for All-CNY boys basketball team: Congratulations to freshman point-guard Nolan Brunelle for being selected to the boys basketball All-CNY 1st Team! This honor is given to the top basketball players in Central New York. The selection is voted on by members of the staff at Syracuse.com based on overall play throughout the 2022-23 season. Nolan helped his team to a 15-7 record this season and a run into the quarterfinals in sectionals. The team was ranked as high as #12 in New York State during the season. Nolan was one of three captains. He led the team with 20 points per-game (445 total), 5 assists per-game (106 total), and 4 steals per-game (84 total). Nolan was often ranked near the top in the section. He also had 84 three-pointers, which ranked near the top in the state. Nolan broke his single season JE ...
Second and third grade ELL students write & illustrate their own stories Second and third grade ELL students write & illustrate their own stories: Second and third grade ELL students have been working on a writing project that has sparked their imaginations. The students have been writing fiction The Wall of Fame showcases students' work. stories and creating illustrations to go along with their work. Once completed, they practice reading the stories aloud. “Writing to entertain has been one of the best parts of this project; the ideas kept pouring in and the students could not stop coming up with more concepts,” explained teacher Danuta Goldmann. Students started the project by sorting a variety of books, sentences, and short reading passages to help understand why each was written, and what the author’s purpose was. “They kept their stories simple but with a twist in each one,” ...
JEMS rewards students for being risk-takers JEMS rewards students for being risk-takers: Jordan-Elbridge Middle School celebrated the learner profile trait, risk-taker, in the month of February. Risk-takers approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; they work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. They are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change, and are not afraid to stand up for what they believe to be right. These students were nominated by their peers for being positive risk-takers: 6th grade - Zoey Magid 7th grade - Jordan Williams 8th grade - Natalee Emig Seventh grade teacher, Mrs. Giannettino, was also nominated for being a risk-taker by the classroom learning experiences she brings to her students every day. Seven JEHS students participate in National Shakespeare Competition Seven JEHS students participate in National Shakespeare Competition: Seven Jordan-Elbridge High School students participated in this year's National Shakespeare Competition, hosted by the English-Speaking Union. JEHS students have taken part in the competition since 2018. Congratulations to Eric Beasley, Kyra Dominic, Emma Donvito, Cooper Childres, Bridget Whiting, Laney Green, and Mathieu Piper for participating! Students are judged by a panel of teachers from their home school district. From there, one student is chosen to advance to the regional competition, which takes place at the Syracuse Stage. This year, Emma Donvito was chosen to advance, with Eric Beasley as the first alternate and Cooper Childres as the second alternate.  The competition was very tight this year, however, and one of the judges remarked, "Any ...
JE teams place in drumline and color guard shows JE teams place in drumline and color guard shows: Jordan-Elbridge hosted two shows on the last weekend of February: the New York State Percussion Circuit Indoor Drumline Show, and the Mid York Color Guard Show. Overall, 12 schools traveled to JE to participate in the events. Congratulations goes to both teams for their wonderful performances. JE's Indoor Percussion Ensemble (IPE) came in first place, and color guard came in second. "It was a highly successful event and was enjoyed by the other schools and fans alike," said coach Dan English. JE's IPE is currently ranked third in the state! JEHS students place in regional SkillsUSA competition JEHS students place in regional SkillsUSA competition: Three Jordan-Elbridge High School students placed at this year’s SkillsUSA Competition! Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Career and Technical Education students competed in the regional competition on Friday, February 10th at SUNY Morrisville. Anthony DeMarco took home first place in Diesel Equipment Technology, Nicholas Colman placed second in Motorcycle Service Technology, and Spencer Shaw placed second in Cosmetology Senior.  The JE students are among 14 Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES students to bring home a medal! Many of the students who placed at the regional event will move on to compete in the SkillsUSA New York State Competition, which will be held this April at the Fairgrounds in Syracuse.
Get to know JEMS' exchange student from Germany Get to know JEMS' exchange student from Germany: Jordan-Elbridge Middle School students have been getting to know a new classmate. Luis Becker traveled to the United States from Muehlhausen, Germany, and now studies as an 8 th grade exchange student at JEMS. His host brother, Gunnard Gustafson, said it’s been fun having someone to hang out with because he’s an only child. Luis said school is a lot different in Germany. His school is a lot bigger than JE, because students in grades 5-12 are in the same school building. He said the atmosphere at school is also a lot different, explaining that sports aren’t practiced where he attends school in Germany; instead, it’s all about the classwork. Luis called his time so far at JE a once in a lifetime experience, and said he wants to study abroad again when he’s ...
